Rusted-on laundry hoses are nearly impossible to unscrew, making it difficult to remove or replace the hose when the time comes. Fortunately, there’s a fairly easy solution to fix the problem, and I’m going to show you how to remove an annoying rusty washing machine hose.
You’ll need a couple of tools for this. First, you need a Dremel or any other rotary tool with an abrasive cutoff wheel. You will also need to have a pipe wrench or water pump pliers. Those would be the easiest to use, though I suppose you can always get by with a regular set of pliers or needlenose pliers, if that’s all you have on hand.
Before you start trying to remove the hose, be sure to shut off the water supply to the washing machine itself. It should be obvious, but it’s worth repeating.
How to remove a rusty washing machine hose
Carefully cut through the hose end a little at a time until the slice extends through the metal. Make two slices on opposite sides of the hose end. Try to avoid cutting too deep, but dont worry if you nick the threads on the valve. The threads dont seal the connection. Thats taken care of by the rubber washer. You can use a hacksaw to make the cuts, but a Dremel tool with an abrasive cutoff wheel works even better.
Dont forget your safety glasses when you’re doing this. You don’t want little flakes of rust or other debris flying into your eye.
Next, try to unscrew the fitting with water pump pliers or a pipe wrench. If its still stuck, pry it off with the pliers.
After you’ve removed the hose, clean off any remaining rust and corrosion from the valve threads with a wire brush.
And that’s it! Now, it’s ready to attach the new hose.
What are the best kind of washing machine hoses to use?
Braided stainless steel hoses are the best washing machine hoses to use. Why? They’re the most durable option available, with a reinforced rubber hose encased in flexible stainless steel that withstands pressure better than rubber lines. Most come with an auto-shutoff valve too, which gives you a little added peace of mind. There’s a reason why braided stainless steel hoses are the industry standard.
How often should you replace washing machine hoses?
Plumbing experts recommend replacing your washing machine hoses every three t0 five years. It’s worth checking your hoses from time to time too. If you notice tears, leaks, kinks, corrosion or discoloration, you should replace the hose immediately. Sure, you can sometimes fix the hose, but it’s better to just replace it. A new braided stainless steel hose typically costs between $10 and $20, far easier and cheaper than dealing with a flooded laundry room.
