Elvis

The Fabelmans

After all these years of making movies that slide auto-biographical elements into his movies, Spielberg drops the pretense and makes a movie that is basically his life writ large on the big screen. And it is a masterpiece. If you want to see the familial drama that helped shaped the greatest American director of all time, you must check this movie out.

Tár

Want to see perhaps the greatest performance from Cate Blanchett that exists? Then you need to check this movie out right now. Hard to imagine she's been able to top herself, but she has. This is a powerhouse of a performance in a fantastic movie to boot.

Top Gun: Maverick

Whether this movie wins the top award, this is the movie of 2022. It broke all sorts of box office records that solidifies its place in history as one of the greatest popcorn movies ever made. And when you see Tom Cruise actually fly those jets, you'll understand why.

Force Majeure

Triangle of Sadness is the most recent movie from Ruben Ostlund about how stupid rich people are. And while it can't be seen at home just yet, you can get a taste of his whole thing with this movie he made a few years back that put him on the map.

Women Talking

A searing indictment on the way women are treated in this country, you may not have a laugh-a-minute experience with this new movie from Sarah Polley, but you will have one that leaves you thinking about things. This one won't melt off you anytime soon.

Bullet Train

To show how varied a career can be, just look at Brian Tyree Henry's other movie to come out in 2022. A far cry from the movie he was nominated as Best Supporting Actor for (Causeway), Bullet Train is a bonkers action film that feels more like a cartoon than most cartoons. But it is an absolute blast and he is keyed into the movie's bananas wavelength.

Ikiru

The basis for Living, a movie nominated for a few Oscars this year (Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay), is a masterful Japanese film released in 1952 by the master Akira Kurosawa. If you want to get a taste of what inspired this new retelling in England, be sure to pick up this movie. It'll hit you right in the heartstrings.

Killing Them Softly

Andrew Dominik has returned from a 10-year hiatus with a massively divisive movie about Marilyn Monroe that has netted Ana De Armas a Best Actress nomination. If you want to see his prior movie to get a sense of how this provocateur likes to poke his audience in the eye, you need to check out this savage crime drama that eviscerates the entire concept of American capitalism.

Possessor: Uncut

In one of the more controversial moves this year, Andrea Riseborough pulled off a miraculous campaign to get herself nominated as Best Actress for the indie To, Leslie. One of the more chameleonic performers today, she looks disappears completely from picture to picture. And that is almost the text of the wild movie she made a few years back called Possessor. Want to see what she's really got? Pick up this insane movie right now.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever

The first Black Panther was a massive success, netting some Oscar nominations for itself. And the sequel has cracked the code again, as Angela Bassett is up for Best Supporting Actress (and very well seems poised to win). Not to mention nominations for Best Song, Costume Design, Makeup/Hairstyling, and Visual Effects. If you missed this when it was in theaters, you should grab this now.

The Revenant

If there's one thing you can't argue about when it comes to the works of Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu it's that they look stunning. So it's no surprise that his newest movie Bardo, streaming exclusively on Netflix, is up for Best Cinematography. If you wanna see some of the gorgeous imagery he's cooked up before, check out his last movie to see some amazing visuals that helped net him a Best Director statue.

Turning Red

Another year, another Best Animated Field that has a Disney picture in it. And this time it's one of the best they've made in years. Check out this rollicking yarn about a girl growing up before the big show. You never know with the Best Animated Field. It's anyone's ball game.

Moana

One of the movies nominated for Best Animated Feature was a big surprise to us, but The Sea Beast was a real gem. Streaming directly on Netflix, you can check it out right now. If you wanna see where this filmmaker comes from, check out his last movie. The wonderful, top-tier Disney movie that is called Moana. Everyone will be happy watching this movie as prep for the big show.

Puss in Boots: The Last Wish

No one had many expectations for a sequel to Puss in Boots, especially one that took this long to come out. But somehow Dreamworks pulled off a miracle as this is an absolute delight. One that is more than worthy of being nominated this year.

Pan's Labyrinth

Guillermo Del Toro is one of the masters working in cinema today. Just look at his newest movie, a stop-motion animated movie that manages to breathe some fresh air into the Pinocchio story. To get a good sense of what tone he's working in with this movie, check out his masterpiece. Truly one of the most stunning works of the 21st century, which his version of Pinocchio gets very close to.
